Black hole masses in active galaxies

چکیده
This contribution reviews two topics of current interest in the study of black hole demographics in active galaxies: Can the stellar velocity dispersions of quasar host galaxies be measured? And can we constrain the black hole mass function below 10 M ?

Supermassive Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei. I. the Consistency of Black Hole Masses in Quiescent and Active Galaxies
We report the first results of a program to measure accurate stellar velocity dispersions in the bulges of the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which accurate black hole (BH) masses have been determined via reverberation mapping. We find good agreement between BH masses obtained from reverberation mapping, and from the M• −σ relation as defined by quiescent galaxies, indicatin...
متن کاملBlack Holes in Active Galaxies
Recent years have seen tremendous progress in the quest to detect supermassive black holes in the centers of nearby galaxies, and gas-dynamical measurements of the central masses of active galaxies have been valuable contributions to the local black hole census. This review summarizes measurement techniques and results from observations of spatially resolved gas disks in active galaxies, and re...
متن کاملThe Black Hole to Bulge Mass Relation in Active Galactic Nuclei
The masses of the central black holes in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) can be estimated using the broad emission-lines as a probe of the virial mass inside the BLR. Using reverberation mapping to determine the size of the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the width of the variable component of the line profile Hβ line it is possible to find quite accurate virial mass estimates for AGN with adequate d...
متن کاملThe Black Hole Masses and Host Galaxies of Bl Lac Objects
We have measured the central stellar velocity dispersion in the host galaxies of 11 BL Lac objects with redshifts z ≤ 0.125. The range of velocity dispersions, ∼ 170 − 370 km s−1, is similar to that of nearby radio galaxies. Using the correlation between stellar velocity dispersion and black hole mass defined for nearby galaxies, we derive estimates of the black hole masses in the range 107.9 −...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Black Hole Mass and Velocity Dispersion in Seyfert 1 Galaxies
Black hole masses in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are difficult to measure using conventional dynamical methods, but can be determined using the technique of reverberation mapping. However, it is important to verify that the results of these different methods are equivalent. This can be done indirectly, using scaling relations between the black hole and the host galaxy spheroid. For this purpos...
